Intermediate-mass black holes with the EVN

Submitter: Zsolt Paragi
Description: Ultra-luminous X-ray sources (ULX) exceed the Eddington luminosity for a stellar mass object by factors of 100-1000. Some of these thus believed to be powered by intermediate mass black holes (IMBH). Assuming that these systems are indeed very massive, one may calculate the expected radio flux densities. The above plot shows the result for various X-ray luminosities, assuming a central black hole mass of 1000 Msun. Some of the most extreme ULXs are plotted as well. The shaded area shows the regime where these could be still detected with the European VLBI Network. M82 X-1 is clearly the best candidate for VLBI imaging (to be cont.)
