NGC6946

Submitter: Albert van Duin
Description: This galaxy was found by William Herschel on September 9th 1798.
It's a rather nearby spiral galaxy, obscured by interstellar matter of our own galaxy, as it is quite close to the galactic plane.
Eight supernovae have been discovered in NGC 6946 so far:
SN 1917A, SN 1939C, SN 1948B, SN 1968D, SN 1969P, SN 1980K SN 2002hh, and 2004et.
With this number of suppernovae, NGC 6946 is leading the statistics, just one SN more than the runner-up: M83.
This image is a 20 minute exposure from Beilen with a 20cm Astrograph and a Canon 350D digital camera.
