Supercavities in Hydra A

Submitter: Michael Wise
Description: Composite color image of the Hydra A cluster of galaxies illustrating the close connection between the observed, large X-ray cavity system (shown in blue and the low frequency, 330 Mhz radio emission (shown in green). This system of cavities has been created by a continuous outflow or a series of bursts from the AGN in the nucleus of the central galaxy over the past 200 to 500 Myr. The cavities have displaced 10% of the plasma within a 300 kpc radius of the central galaxy, creating a swiss-cheese-like topology in the hot gas. The 330 Mhz radio data is from Lane et al. (2004). The familiar 1.4 GHz VLA image of Hydra A is also shown in the core in yellow. (Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal, astro-ph/0612100)
