Prototype Embrace Tile.

Submitter: Parbhu Patel
Description: This is a prototype receptor tile designed for Embrace, as part of the multi-national SKADS project funded by the European community. It is one of the technical concepts that have been proposed for a station of the future Square Km Array (SKA), a giant radio telescope.
Embrace is a demonstrator for the socalled aperture array concept, in which about 100 tiles like the one shown above are combined into a phased array. By adding the signals picked up by the receptors on the tiles with different phases, the sensitivity of the array can be maximized in a particular viewing direction, for instance a radio source in the distant universe. More than one of such 'beams' can be formed simultaneously, which makes the aperture array a very attractive concept for SKA.
The Embrace demonstrator will be built near the existing WSRT radio telescope, so that its signals can be combined with those of the WSRT, with its very well-known properties. This is a powerful method for evaluating the properties of the Embrace concept.
