Continuing galaxy formation

Submitter: Tom Oosterloo
Description: Studying the faint outer regions of galaxies has become increasingly important in recent years. It has become clear that many important clues about how galaxies assemble should lie in these regions. Although galaxy formation started a long time ago, most galaxies continue to form. The figure shows the spiral galaxy NGC 925 where the contours show the neutral gas as observed with the WSRT. The arrow points to a blob of gas that is falling into the galaxy. This gas cloud brings a new supply of fresh, primordial gas to NGC 925.
