To infinity and beyond......

Submitter: Tom Oosterloo
Description: The WSRT is worldfamous for the excellent images it has produced of the neutral hydrogen of nearby galaxies. Recently, however, the WSRT has now also started to observe the gas in galaxies as far away as is possible with current technology. The picture shows the first results of very deep observations of a cluster of galaxies at a distance of almost 3.000.000.000 lightyears (performed by Verheijen et al.). Before these observations, the gas in only 2 of such distant galaxies had been detected, while in the new WSRT data 39 of such systems have been detected and further observations will bring this number to above 200. Hence, these deep WSRT observations open up an entire new field of study. The picture shows the detection of the gas in three galaxies in this distant cluster.
