Description: | ASTRON's Martijn van Veelen proved he can remain cool under pressure (left image), successfully defending his thesis under tough probing in Groningen recently. The picture on the right shows Dr van Veelen "letting his hair down" in the Groningen night life, accompanied by his two (unofficial) "night-shift" paranymphs, JIVE's Dr Anderson who also recently successfully defended his own PhD thesis, and ASTRON's Dr Smirnov. One could propose that obtaining a PhD considerably increases the desire to writhe around a pole at three in the morning, but this is a purely empirical relation. To fully describe it using a theoretical model would probably require a description longer than Martijn's thesis.
