Ventspils Radio Telescope

Submitter: Rob Millenaar
Description: This is the 32m radio telescope near Ventspils in Latvia. A remnant from the Soviet era, this telescope was used to eavesdrop on Western satellite communications. In recent days scientists and engineers from Leonid Gurvits' university in Ventspils have worked to convert the telescope into a 'new' radio astronomy facility. It will be turned into a full-fledged VLBI station and will put Latvia on the radio astronomy map.
The telescope is built like a tank and despite some corrosion here and there will hopefully enjoy a second lease on life as a major contributor to the EVN network.
