Butterfly Nebula and Gamma Cygni

Submitter: Albert van Duin
Description: Gamma Cygni is a star in the constellation Cygnus. It also has the traditional name Sadr (also spelled Sadir or Sador). The traditional name comes from the Arabic word sadr, "chest", the same word which gave rise to the star Schedar (Alpha Cassiopeiae). This star is surrounded by a diffuse nebula called IC1318, also called the Butterfly Nebula or the Gamma Cygni region. This nebula is hard to detect visually with a telescope but it's quite bright in photographs. At this time of year Cygnus is high in the sky around midnight.

The image is a 54 minute exposure made in Beilen on May 17, 2007 at 1600 ISO with a modified Canon 350D and a 20-cm (8") f/2.75 ASA Astrograph. The bright star at the top is Sadr, the middle star of the Cygnus Cross. The open cluster NGC6910 is visible just left of this star.
