Visualizing LOFAR data

Submitter: Joe Masters
Description: These images were created by the LOFAR User Software Group, from a recent CS1 observation (L2007_02412). A subset of the observation has been recast as a datacube in the HDF5 file format. The axes of the cube are time, frequency and baseline for a single sub-band. Using a freely available visualization package called Visit, one can inspect the data interactively.

Four different views of the data are shown here. The top-left figure shows the full datacube with the bandpass (yellow/orange) and radio frequency interference (red) clearly visible. The top-right figure depicts a one-dimensional slice through the datacube for a single baseline and time. Again, the bandpass is clearly visible. In the lower left, the datacube is viewed from a different orientation and all values below a specified threshold have been suppressed. The lower right shows a closeup view of the cube with the threshold applied for a region with particularly strong RFI.
