The march of the generations

Submitter: Jan Noordam
Description: On July 26th 2007 (see the image of that date), some of the ashes of Grote Reber, the first radio astronomer, was sunk into the base of the 25m Dwingeloo telescope, underneath a commemorative plaque. This was one in a series of such ceremonies at 13 of the most venerable radio telescopes all over the world.
The image shows some of our own, slightly younger giants of the past of the Dwingeloo telescope, inspecting the plaque. Arie Hin (2nd from left) has been there from the beginning, and saved the day when things went terribly wrong at the opening by Queen Juliana, in 1956. Rijk van't Land (far right) has, among other things, been the "terror" of the government buying agency (Rijks Inkoop Bureau) for many years, thereby saving us a lot of money that could then be used for more science. Ernst Raimond (ledt) and Wim Brouw have both been directors of Dwingeloo and Westerbork.
