Description: | The image shows the participants of a recent workshop on one of the SKADS Design Studies (DS2) in Pushchino, 200 km south of Moscow. SKADS is a truly pan-European effort towards the giant Square Km Array (SKA) radio telescope, and DS2 concentrates on simulating the kind of data that a SKA observation would produce. It endeavours not only to predict the signals of the (very faint) objects that SKA would observe, but also the co-rupting effects of the observing instrument. The conclusion of the meeting is that all is well in SKADS simulation, since the group has a sound strategy to achieve its goals. The only thing that remains to be done is to carry out this strategy in the next 1.5 years. The DS2 team is obviously a resilient group: Despite feeling a little bloated, they otherwise manage to look rather perky on the morning after the Russian-style conference dinner, with lots of increasingly wobbly toasts. Bonding was continued later in Moscow, under the expert guidance of Oleg, a local boy. |
