PHAROS team inspecting the Lovell dish

Submitter: Jan Geralt Bij de Vaate
Description: An ASTRON team made a visit to the focus box of the Lovell dish (Jodrell Bank, UK), in order to estimate the possibilities for mounting the PHAROS Focal Plane Array. The demonstrator array would be capable of synthesizing four closely packed beams, thereby enhancing the capabilities of the dish. Further aspects like beam shape control, possible with synthesized focal plane arrays, would also be tested.
The use of Focal Plane Arrays represents a natural evolution for a 50 year old reflector. But also for younger systems, as will be demonstrated with the ASTRON APERTIF Focal Plane Array project to be used on the WSRT.

PHAROS is an EU research project and part of RadioNet FP6.
