Rampant Symbolism

Submitter: Madroon E.J.
Description: The above picture was shot towards the end of the recent ASTRON/JIVE Open Day, at the moment that the last vistors were leaving, replete and impressed.

For those who are sensitive to that kind of thing, the picture positively oozes symbolism. Note the dark clouds, defiantly faced (but not by all). Note the silver lining (or is it gold?). Note the bright horizon: "It is morning again in ASTRON" (or is it a sunset?). Note the lone maverick looking in a new direction (or is it an old stalwart looking back, while all the professional noses are toeing the party line?).

Symbolism aside, the WSRT has the magnificence of an Old Lion, once the cutting edge of world astronomy, still in many ways the best, loyally holding the fort while LOFAR staggers into existence, staunchly serving as midwife to SKA technology.

If one were not a tong-tied technologist, one would almost wax poetic. Failing that, one is tempted to speculate which functionary ASTRON (or even JIVE) might dispense with in favour of a real poet, to valorise our intangibles.
