Description: | Today, we celebrate the official opening of the Radio Observatory Control Room. This event marks a new era for the way Radio Telescopes are operated at ASTRON. Not only will the facilities be operated remotely but also will the operator on duty be in control of two independent instruments. To enable this, status information is presented in condensed form and a desktop is provided with ample space for all the tools required to stay in control. In the past month, we have already had a taste of fruitful and energetic exchanges taking place in the new control room. Engineers and operational personnel have been walking in and out of the room to learn the latest news and enable the newest functionality. The white boards have been filled to the rim and the telephone handset hardly had time to cool down. It is inspiring to see the enthusiasm with which everybody has embarked on the journey towards initial LOFAR&WSRT operations. In the coming year, we will see the control room really start to rock as roll out of the first twenty or so LOFAR stations in the Netherlands is carried out and the first international connections are realized as well. Where are my dancing shoes? |
