MIRI SMO Flight Model Integration

Submitter: Gabby Kroes and Sandra Eggens
Description: After engineering, qualification and verification models it is time for the “real thing”; the Flight Model.

The picture shows the Short Wave Arm assembly (SW Arm) which is one of the two arms of the Spectrometer Main Optics (SMO) for the MIRI (Mid Infra Red Instrument) for JWST. The pictures are taken prior to the very important Main Inspection Point (MIP). This MIP is an intermediate inspection on the cleanliness of the Flight Model before all the lids and covers can be mounted.

The MIP has passed successfully, and after mounting lid and cover the SW Arm will be transferred to the clean tent, and verification will start. This verification consists of full testing of both the optical and mechanical performance.

Parallel with the verification of the SW arm, the integration of its sister unit, the Long Wave Arm (LW Arm), will take place. Again, full verification will be performed on this part of the SMO prior to delivery of the two Arms to RAL in England, where the integration and verification of the full MIRI instrument will take place.
