Skating on Thin Ice

Submitter: Madroon E.J.
Description: When you are a Leader, you run risks. This truism was demonstrated once more last friday by the Black Belt Interferometrist (BBI) behind the commissioning of LOFAR. Determined to enjoy the (now rare) cold spell in the Netherlands, he boldly went where no man had gone before, and found himself skating on thin ice. Suddenly, the sound of merrily propagating cracks rose alarmingly, leaving open water behind his rapidly accelerating strokes. There was no turning back. After a frantic flight forward, he resigned himself to his fate, and payed the price like a man. Fortunately, his stature saved him from going under.

Safely back on shore, he ruefully remarked: "It is sometimes more difficult to calibrate the threacherousness of such a beautiful ice-floor than to calibrate LOFAR". He spoke in jest, of course.
