Description: | A dream has come true. For years people in the EXPReS project have worked hard to improve the sensitivity of e-EVN observations, gradually increasing the data rates from 64 to 512 Mbit/s. On the 5th of February we have run our first 6-station e-VLBI test at a data rate of 1 Gbit/s, that is the maximum achievable even with Mark5A disk recording. The image produced from the data shows the familiar structure of our fringe-finder source, 3C395. There is some more work to do before this mode will be operational for science use, but we have reached a very important milestone that makes very high sensitivity real-time VLBI observations possible with the European VLBI Network. |
