Description: | Last week a major milestone in the MIRI project was achieved. One of the main parts of the spectrometer, the SMO, was vibrated to simulate the violate launch it will experience in a few years. The vibration tests were performed at the facilities of ESA-ESTEC in Noordwijk on the actual hardware that will be launched in 2013 on board of the James Webb Space Telescope. The picture shows the handling of one of two boxes that contain the SMO onto the vibration table for lateral testing. As one can see there is enough redundacy in the number of hands to prevent any disaster. The tests were very succesfull thanks to the team of ETS at ESTEC and a very dedicated team of people from Astron. |
