X-Shooter: Mission accomplished

| Description: | This week an ESO team arrived for inspection and operation of the X-shooter near infrared spectrograph, which has been built here at Astron during the last four years by a Dutch consortium. The instrument performed very well. Various spectra were taken at operational conditions and the instrument survived several torture tests. Tuesday, the 18th of March, the inspection team concluded that, 'Preliminary Acceptance Europe 1' was successfully passed. Three weeks from now the instrument will be shipped to ESO, Garching, where it is integrated with the Backbone and UV and VIS Spectrographs. The plan is to have X-shooter on the Telescope in Paranal, Chile in September 2008. |
