Kickstarting the LOFAR LCUs

Submitter: Arno Schoenmakers
Description: Last week, a batch of 46 workstations arrived at ASTRON from ClusterVision. These are the first Local Control Units (LCUs) to be deployed at the LOFAR field stations. To verify that these systems are all functioning properly, it was decided to install (or kickstart) them all with the Operating System and software that will be running on these units when they are placed in the LOFAR cabinets. An appropriate place was chosen for this, being the ''aquarium'' room in the main hall. Now, passers-by can watch us sweating and swearing as we are dealing with the inevitable problems encountered on the way... But at last, we have now demonstrated that all systems are working properly and could be accepted for field usage.

In the picture above, Teun Grit (left) and Arno Schoenmakers (right), responsible for setting up and verifying the LCUs, still seem to be all too happy to give one of these systems away. However, the photographer was too busy taking this picture to accept the tempting offer of a personal LCU system.
