Today's colloquium: "Centaurus A - the nearest AGN" (by Frank Israel, Leiden)

Submitter: Stefanie Muehle
Description: NGC 5128 is host of the radio source Cen A, fueled by the nearest active galaxy nucleus (AGN). Its activity is the result of a relatively recent galaxy merger, the traces of which are still in evidence. In its central region all the hallmark phenomena can be observed in detail: circumnuclear starburst, jet expulsion, radio variability, and infall of of gas. The talk will present observational history, physical environment and overall structure before focussing on the central few hundred parsecs.
