First images made with the FABRIC software correlator

Submitter: Yurii Pidopryhora
Description: The software correlator has been developed at JIVE as part of the FABRIC (Future Arrays of Broadband Radio-telescopes on Internet Computing) research activity of EXPReS (Express Production Real-time e-VLBI Service) project. Unlike the main JIVE "hardware" VLBI correlator, it is just a program that can be run on any computer, but it does require a lot of computing power to be run efficiently. It has already been successfully used to conduct ftp-tests (few second correlations) during regular EVN sessions, however now it is the first time that we correlated a relatively large amount of VLBI data, 2 hours -- enough to make images of the observed sources shown above. The data used was obtained in EVN network monitoring experiment N08C1 (PI Antonios Polatidis). Both sources are quasars, standard VLBI calibrators.
