| Description: | This photograph shows the “LOFAR assembly unit” of Autonational, located in Exloo where the High Band Antenna Tiles (HBA Tiles) of LOFAR are produced. Autonational is situated in IJlst, the Netherlands, and develops technology and fully automated production lines for Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) cups and composites. Autonational also supplies equipment for fiber-reinforced tubes, curved tubes, T-shape tubes, leak testing and special machinery for almost every market. An HBA tile has a surface of 25 m˛, and a lot of Expanded Polystyrene is used in the production. Because of the dimension of the tile, a location close to the central core of LOFAR was chosen. From there, the produced tiles will be placed directly in the field, using the specially designed transport trailers shown in the foreground. |
