AstroFest 2009

Submitter: Tom Oosterloo
Description: It is slowly becoming a tradition that all Astron/Jive astronomers, plus others interested, once a year get together for a full day to honour all the astronomy done in Dwingeloo. While on previous occasions this was done at the fancy Landgoed Overcinge, this year's AstroFest was held at the more mundane Bussemaker in Exloo.

The day had a packed programme of talks, covering the full breadth of astronomical research done in Dwingeloo. It also included a visit to Lofar station CS302 and the Superterp. For many this was the first time to see Lofar in the real field. Everybody was of course impressed, although many remarked that it takes some imagination to realise that with these simple-looking "sticks and wires" and "mattresses" we will see the first luminous objects in the universe. But we all know that Lofar is being built for something else than looking good. This will be demonstrated at next year's Astrofest.
