1964: Questions in dutch parliament about Benelux cross antenna

Submitter: Michel Arts
Description: The plans for a Benelux cross antenna (see daily image http://www.astron.nl/dailyimage/main.php?date=20080222 ) gave rise of written questions in dutch parliament. Member of parliament Van der Goes van Naters (PvdA) was worried about the impact of such a huge installation near the dutch-belgium border on the natural area. He was also afraid that allowing the cross antenna would create a precedent for other institutes who also needed quiet areas for their installations. His suggestion was to look for an area in the much more open belgium areas. Prime minister Marijnen answered that the Benelux cross antenna was already out of date. Instead of the cross antenna an east-west array would be built. One was looking for a place in the province of Drenthe near the radio telescope of Dwingeloo. This east-west array is what we now know as the WSRT. The concern about the impact on the natural area and precedent for other institutes ended in a fizzle: the prime minister simply answered that the consultations about the place of the new radio telescope were not ended yet. A final decision would not be taken before the relevant commission would give its advice. He also stated that deterioration of natural areas could not be prevented under all circumstances.

The above scan comes from the website www.statengeneraaldigitaal.nl. This website is a co-operation between dutch parliament and the Royal Library. For this website all parliamentary documents (such as proceedings, bills, reports and written questions) from 1814 up to 1995 will be scanned and made public via the website. At this moment the site goes back to 1945. Next year the project will be finished and all dutch parliamentary documentation since 1814 will be available on-line. Since 1995 parliamentary documentation is available in pdf-format. So these documents need not to be scanned. They are available via another website.
