LOFAR HBA Progress at Effelsberg

Submitter: James M Anderson
Description: The installation of LOFAR high band tiles (HBAs) at the international LOFAR station at Effelsberg continues.

The picture above shows the state of the HBA installation after lunch on the afternoon of July 13, just over halfway through the installation procedure. In the center one can see the installation crane and the unfolding platform, with a folded HBA tile fresh from the delivery truck standing in the unfolding area. The filed already contains 53 of the total 96 tiles which are to be installed at Effelsberg.

Looking down in the image one can see the low band (LBA) field for the Effelsberg station, including the paving stone corners on the antenna groundplanes to keep the LBA antennas from blowing away during heavy windstorms.

This picture of the Effelsberg LOFAR station was taken from the elevation axis platform on the 100 m telescope at Effelsberg, the big brother to the developing LOFAR station.
