Today's colloquium: Space Weather - An Applications Perspective (A. Glover, ESA)

Submitter: Jean-Mathias Griessmeier
Description: Space Weather can be defined as “conditions on the sun and in the solar wind, magnetosphere, ionosphere and thermosphere that can influence the performance and reliability of space-borne and ground-based technological systems and can affect human life or health.” As such it provides us with a unique opportunity to combine several fields of research, both scientific and technical, in understanding how physical process occurring in the Solar-Terrestrial environment are able to affect man-made systems such as satellite electronics, terrestrial power grids and radio communications. This talk will briefly outline how Space Weather phenomena lead to effects on
man-made systems and what user-oriented services can do to help mitigate these effects. European and international perspectives will also be discussed.
