|Description:|| Recently, ASTRON and JIVE organised a Girlsday, as part of a national programme to encourage girls to choose for a career in science or technology. After all, our institutes are among the most attractive manifestations of these subjects. It was the third Girlsday organised by ASTRON and JIVE. This year, we aimed at high school girls who are a bit younger than in past ASTRON/JIVE Girlsdays. All students participated in a Technasium programme. The girls were kept busy by a diverse group of female engineers and scientists, who endeavoured to convey their enthusiasm for their work. |
The day was a Big Success, even if we will have to wait a few years to see direct results. However, there are reasons to be optimistic: the number of female students opting for 'beta' has increased significantly in recent years, and there is little doubt that efforts such as the ASTRON/JIVE's Girlsday and Spacegirls (see http://www.astron.nl/dailyimage/main.php?date=20090910 ) have contributed to this.
The picture shows the girls and their role models. See whether you can tell them apart. For more pictures, see
