Dedication of the LOFAR station in Tautenburg

Submitter: Matthias Hoeft (TLS), Corina Vogt
Description: On Wednesday, June 23rd, the international LOFAR station in Tautenburg - DE603 - was formally handed over to the Thüringer Landessternwarte (TLS). The documents were signed by Artie Hatzes, director of the TLS and Corina Vogt on behalf of ASTRON/LOFAR (bottom and middle right). This was the final step in constructing this station at a distance of 400 km from the core in the Netherlands.

Jochen Eislöffel (scientist at TLS) and Artie Hatzes became aware of the LOFAR radio telescope at the annual meeting of the German Astronomical society in 2005 in Cologne. The TLS made a successful proposal to the Thuringian Ministry of Science, which supported the building of the station from the European Fund for Regional Development. For the TLS and the state of Thuringia, the participation in LOFAR is a strategic investment.

Construction started in autumn 2008 and was completed at the end of last year by placing the last HBA tiles. The station was connected at the beginning of 2010 and has been used successfully in subsequent observations. The collaboration between the professional teams at the TLS and ASTRON and astronomers looking to get the best out of LOFAR have contributed to the success of the roll-out of international stations.

With the ceremony on June 23rd, the LOFAR station in Tautenburg was officially inaugurated and the participants (bottom left) at this ceremony could enjoy the beautiful surroundings of DE603 and its wildlife - may they live together in peace.
