A Canadian in Dwingeloo

Submitter: Marijke Haverkorn, Madroon
Description: The fact that we've had a very hot Dutch summer was very noticeable in the whole building, especially on the poorly ventilated floor of the ASTRON Astronomy Group in the 'new' (1981) building. But this knowledge seemed to have passed by one particular astronomer. The whole summer, in the heat and blazing sunlight, a pair of hockey skates was lying hopefully on the window sill, ready to be taken out to the Moordenaarsveen at the first hint of frozen water. Here the Dutch-Canadian roots of the owner of the skates show: Keeping hope against hope, even when Erwin Krol tells us that it will be 31 degrees again.

It is this Mountie mentality that made the Canadians shine in 'their' Winter Olympics this year. We Dutch will need some of that (plus 200 MEuros) to shine in the same way in the 2018 World Cup and the 2020 Summer Olympics, both of which will be organized in the Netherlands to mark the opening of SKA.
