Today’s Colloquium: A decelerating jet observed in the X-ray transient XTE J1752-223

Submitter: Jun Yang
Description: With the EVN and VLBA, we observed a decelerating jet in Galactic black hole candidate XTE J1752-223 during the X-ray soft state. See Daily Image of 2010 Sep 14:

Furthermore, we performed follow-up VLBA observations in 2010 April to detect the core of XTE J1752-223 after the X-ray soft-hard state transition.

The above images show the preliminary images of the latest VLBA observations. We successfully detected a compact feature with a peak brightness of 0.4 mJy/beam in the left dirty image. The small clean image displays the jet feature restored with a circular Gaussian model. However, the new jet component was not shown four day later. The component is most likely a dying hot spot in the lobe of XTE J1752-223, analogous to bright hot spots in the lobes of extragalactic jets.

The VLBI results of this mysterious Galactic source will be summarized by Jun Yang in the Colloquium room at 15:30 this afternoon.
