The EVN Symposium 2010, Manchester, UK

Submitter: Stephen Bourke, Mehreen Mahmud
Description: Last week saw the EVN Symposium take place in Manchester. This biennial event brings together those involved with VLBI in Europe and further a field to present and learn about the latest science and technological developments related to the European VLBI Network.

A wide range of science topics featured, including stellar objects, young and old, active galactic nuclei and nearby galaxies, star formation and accretion at high redshifts, and extreme astrophysics. Interspersed were talks on topics such as wide field VLBI, the development of intermediate and long baseline networks in Europe and around the world, and a history of the EVN itself.

As well as the science sessions in Manchester, the EVN users meeting took place at Jodrell Bank in the shadow of the 250 foot Lovell telescope. Later that day the traditional Home vs Internationals football match took place, with the Mancunians edging out a 3-1 victory, with some some close calls and heroic saves.

As ever the EVN Symposium also proved to be a great opportunity for a close but dispersed community to meet face to face, with the restaurants and pubs of Manchester being found very conducive to the integration of the human side of the Network. While many young faces were present, the conference dinner also provided an opportunity to bid farewell to one of the EVN's old hands, Ralph Spencer, due to retire at the end of September.
