A busy summer!

Submitter: Raffaella Morganti
Description: It has been a busy summer in the astronomy "corridor". In addition to 6 summer students (our new record!), we have had so many other guests that we almost had to send our staff in holiday to make space for the visitors! This Daily Image shows an - incomplete - collection of pictures we took of them.

It is interesting to see the increasing number of bachelor and master students who spend time at ASTRON for their project. Furthermore, the Helena Kluyvert female visitor programme really took off this year. Only this summer we had four visitors. You can see the web page http://www.astron.nl/astronomy-group/female-visitor-programme/visitors/visitors for more information and don't forget to encourage your female collaborators to look into the possibility of visiting ASTRON using the Helena Kluyver grant!

Who are they?
In the top row, from left to right Michiel Lambrechts (from Leiden, working with Marijke), Trevor Sloughter (from Jacobs University Bremen for a project with Jean-Mathias), Nazli Dagtekin working for a Master with Tom and Josh, Milan de Heijer at ASTRON for a month to work with Tom and Paolo on the Tully-Fisher relation for early-type galaxies, Min-Young Lee visiting Astron together with her supervisor and Vincent Dekker (3e jaar UvA, working for his bachelor with Jason).

Claudio Maccone and Alan Penny and (middle row, from the left) visited ASTRON and Mike Garret to strength the collaboration on the SETI project with LOFAR. In particular, Alan worked at LOFAR data setting up a LOFAR-SETI test experiment. He will probably become a regular ASTRON's visitor!
The PhD student Nebiha Shafi (HartRAO and University of the Witwatersrand, South Africa) is by now a regular guest at ASTRON. This time, she completed a draft of a paper in collaboration with Raffaella and Tom. Her supervisor, Roy Booth, was also at ASTRON for a few days to discuss her future projects. Bülent Kiziltan (UCSC) visited ASTRON for his collaboration with Jason on millisecond pulsars.

Part of Helena Kluyvert female visitor programme - Bottom row, from left to right. Anya Bilous (PhD student at the University of Virginia) who succeed in getting very interesting results with LOFAR on the study of pulsars (and in particular Abnormally Intensive Pulses) in collaboration with Vlad and Jason.
Trish Henning from University of New Mexico in Albuquerque. As vice chair of the US SKA Consortium she participated in many of the meetings at the ISKAF2010 and after that she stayed around to opportunities for future extragalactic HI emission surveys with WSRT and Apertif. Snezana Stanimirovic from University of Wisconsin, Madison. (middle row, on the right) Luisa Ostorero, from the University of Turin (Italy) was here to work with Raffaella on the galactic environment of young radio sources.
