M57 with 40 cm F/5 telescope

Submitter: Rik ter Horst
Description: Last Tuesday I finally got the chance to test my new Equatorial Platform for my 40 cm F/5 telescope. This platform makes it possible to guide an object with high accuracy for a considerable time. This time M57 was the object, in fact this was my very first attempt to image a deepsky object (so far I only imaged moon and planets). The camera is a DMK31 monochrome camera and this image is a stack of 50 frames, with a 4 sec exposure per frame. This short exposure time is used to reduce effects of seeing, wind and drive errors, improving the PSF considerably. Despite the short total exposure time, an almost full moon and a lot of 'sluierbewolking' some nice detail is visible within the ring system. Next time I'll try to make an image with 500 frames, to reduce noise, and to even further improve the visibility of detail. To be continued....
