Description: | Prof John Baldwin, FRS, was a member of the gleaming "second generation" of radio astronomers at Cambridge, which also comprised Tony Hewish, Graham Smith, Peter Scheuer, John Shakeshaft and Malcolm Longair. In the words of Harry van der Laan, "it is amazing how illustrious they all became!" John was perhaps the one with the closest ties with ASTRON, in many different ways. Apart from having many friends in the Netherlands, he served on our Board of Foreign Advisors and on the WSRT Program Committee. He also conducted the 6C and 7C low-frequency surveys, which greatly helped us in designing the LOFAR telescope, especially its calibration. And he and his group were the most successful participants in the ASTRON-led program for the development of diffraction-limited imaging with the optical telescopes on La Palma. On a personal note, I was most impressed with his attitude when I almost managed to ruin an entire observing trip to La Palma for him. The details of this episode are mercifully forgotten, but his coolness, kindness and active assistance during those harrowing hours are the true measure of the man. Thank you, John. |
