Earthballs teach kids about Universe

Submitter: Femke Boekhorst
Description: Hmmm… how far is the Moon from the Earth… These kids are trying to show this with a small Earth and some rope. Eventually they had to move out of the class room into the hall to show the distance between this small Earth and a self-fabricated Moon.

On Wednesday 1 December, one of the ASTRON astronomers gave a special Earthball workshop at a primary school in Borger, which is closely situated near the new LOFAR telescope. All primary schools in Drenthe received a free Earthball last week from ASTRON and Universe Awareness (UNAWE). The gift was a token of appreciation to the province of Drenthe for their hospitality during the International SKA Forum 2010, organized by ASTRON and the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO). Together with Universe Awareness, ASTRON also wants to interest young kids in astronomy and science. And what better way than to do this than with an Earthball!

The Earthball workshop is developed by Universe Awareness. UNAWE is an international outreach programme that aims to introduce young kids to the wonders of the Universe and interest them in science. During the workshop, the kids learned all sorts of things about the Earth and the Universe, and to top it all off, they got to travel through the Universe in the mobile planetarium of the University of Groningen.
