| Description: | Earlier this year, Prof. Henk Zijm (above, left) was appointed scientific director of DINALOG, the Dutch Institute for Advanced Logistics. With this new and heavy responsibility, Henk felt unable to continue as chairman of the ASTRON board. In March, Professor Karel Gaemers, former dean of the faculty of Science of the University of Amsterdam and former director of NIKHEF accepted the position of chairman of the ASTRON board. Shown above right, Karel recently visited ASTRON and made a tour of our facilities - as well as attending the colloquium. The first board meeting under Karel's chairmanship took place in June. In the evening, a dinner was held for the board and Henk to mark his period as chairman of the board. We thank Henk for the huge contribution he made to the institute during this very crucial period (including the public opening of LOFAR by HM Queen Beatrix) and look forward to working with Prof. Gaemers in the future. |
