Description: | In the future SKA like telescopes will be placed in very warm and dry climates. This has a large thermal effect on the lifetime of the materials and the behaviour of the electronic components. We at ASTRON are happy to be able to perform thermal analysis with Finite Element Methods. An example is shown in the picture. A simple model of an antenna box is heated by the sun and cooled by the passing wind. The temperatures of the surfaces are calculated in the FEM analysis and are shown in different colors. The speed and direction of the passing wind is shown in arrows. Several designs can be analyzed and compared without actually building and testing them in the environment. This is of great help in the design of future telescopes. |
