Doctor Dmitry Duev

Submitter: Tatiana Bocanegra Bahamon
Description: On Thursday, 1st of November our colleague Dmitry Duev defended his PhD thesis at the Lomonosov Moscow State University (MSU). The thesis entitled "Astrometric Applications of Space VLBI" was presented to a scientific council composed of 21 judges, all of whom gave Dmitry a positive vote, granting him a cum laude distinction.

In his thesis, Dmitry developed a sophisticated signal delay model for near-field VLBI observations (including a tropospheric delay model based on ray-tracing through Numerical Weather Models) together with the Jacobian formalism (first suggested by Dr. Sergei Pogrebenko) for spacecraft state vector estimation based on VLBI and Doppler observations.

The software devised by Dmitry has been successfully tested in various spacecraft VLBI tracking sessions (ESA's VenusExpress and MarsExpress, RFSA's RadioAstron, GLONASS) led by the Space Science and Innovative Applications group at JIVE.

Dmitry started his PhD in March, 2010 under the supervision of prof. Vladimir Zharov (MSU) and prof. Leonid Gurvits (JIVE). In 2008, Dmitry first came to JIVE as a summer student under supervision of Dr. S. Pogrebenko, and then in 2010 returned to take part in different VLBI spacecraft tracking experiments.

We would like to congratulate Dmitry on his achievement and wish him a very successful continuation of his scientific career.
