Radio astronomy at ICASSP 2014

Submitter: Rik Jongerius
Description: The 2014 IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech and Signal Processing (ICASSP) took place in May in Firenze (Florence), Italy. This flagship conference of the IEEE signal processing society covers a wide range of topics in the field, ranging from audio processing to (art) forensics and digital signal processing. The Fortezza dal Basso was selected as the venue for this conference with 2000+ attendees.

This year, radio astronomy got some extra attention. Stefan Wijnholds (ASTRON), Alle-Jan van der Veen (TU Delft), and Alfonso Farina (Selex ES) organized a special session on array signal processing for radio astronomy. Topics ranged from robust and computationally efficient calibration strategies, to RFI mitigation, imaging frameworks and SKA power analysis. Both IBM and ASTRON sent a delegation of (DOME) researchers to contribute.

In addition, two radio astronomy posters were presented in the session on Implementations of DSP Systems and Applications. CSIRO presented its work on the digital signal processing for ASKAP, while DOME proposed an ASIC solution for the Square Kilometre Array (SKA).

In this week of stimulating talks and discussion, there was also some time left to enjoy the city and culture of Firenze itself. The social program of the conference included a magnificent banquet in the Salone dei Cinquecento in the Palazzo Vecchio. The council chamber was constructed in 1494 and held the seat of the Consiglio Maggiore. The room was decorated with art from, amongst others, Giorgio Vasari. The food was delicious, an Italian tradition we kept experiencing throughout the the week.

The delegation of DOME researchers should be able to do some great research on their diet of Bistecca alla Fiorentina, antipasti, pizze, pasta, wine, Limoncello, cooked cream, espresso, Amari, and much, much more.
