Out of Paviljoen West

Submitter: Ger van Diepen on behalf of the PWT software group
Description: The work done in the past few weeks (and years) mark an important milestone in the ASTRON housing program. After almost 11 years of solitude in the South and West Pavillion barracks, all persons working in the ASTRON software group have moved to offices in the northern part of the refurbished main building.

It is clear that the move was a major operation, not only for the professional movers doing the actual work, but also for the people involved. Moving means that people have to choose what to keep and what to throw away, which can require a thorough searching of the soul. Looking at the contents of the huge blue container, quite a lot could be thrown away.

To celebrate this milestone, we would like to share some cake with all of you. We thank all people whose continuous efforts have made it possible for us to finally move. We also thank all people for their support when paying a visit to the barracks.

Care was taken that nothing should be left behind. Even the fire hose got a 'to be moved' sticker.

We leave a building that was meant to be used for a few years only. It turned out to be a few more years than that, and looking at the state of the building it was time to move. Especially in the last few months things started to degrade.

Despite all our complaints about isolation, ants, mice, noisy rain, etc., we leave a place that most of us have liked quite a lot. Right from our windows we had a magnificent view of the wilderness with deer, squirrels, woodpeckers and many more birds. Also, the distance to canteen (and other offices) meant that we got free exercise, which some of us will dearly miss now that we are so much closer to things.
