A pyramid and a telescope

Submitter: Zsolt Paragi
Description: Two highlights from the social program of the Regional VLBI Workshop in Mexico (25 Feb. - 1 Mar. 2019).

The Pyramid of the Sun (below) was constructed around 100-200 CE by the Teotihuacan people. It is the third largest pyramid in the world. Astronomers report that climbing up is possible, but the high altitude makes it a bit challenging.

The oldest telecommunication dish in Tulancingo (above) is awaiting refurbishment for radio astronomy use. (Climbing up the structure is possible in this case as well, but the view inside the dish is rather limited). Telescopes like this can be converted to VLBI stations all around the world, allowing to form new, regional VLBI networks.
