Visit to SURFsara

Submitter: Chanka Noah
Description: On 20 June 2019, the trainees following the " ASTRON/JIVE Traineeship in Science Operations with Massive Arrays " (Benedicta Woode, Noah Chanka, Sumit Jaiswal, and Ziad Modak) visited SURFsara in Amsterdam, accompanied by Thomas Franzen (SOS). SURFsara is an institution located at Science Park in Amsterdam's Watergraafsmeer providing services in the field of supercomputers, networks, data storage and quality visualization. It is one of the three LOFAR Long-Term Archive (LTA) hosting institutions, and about half of LOFAR’s current 46 PB of data is stored at SURFsara.

The aim of the visit was to get the trainees exposed to the services offered by the Data Centre (SURFsara). Right before the tour of the Data Centre Tower, trainees were given a presentation by Natalie Danezi (Grid & Cloud Services Advisor at SURFsara) and Onno Zweers (Senior Systems Programmer at SURFsara). The presentation covered SURFsara's history, mission, computer services, and data services. ASTRON/JIVE trainees thoroughly enjoyed the visit as they also got a memorable experience to see the robotic staging of LOFAR data on disks from the tape storage.

This visit was an enriching experience for the trainees. Many thanks to Roberto Pizzo (Head of Science Operations & Support), ASTRON and SURFsara for the opportunity.
