Description: | Today, 43 years and 3 months after joining us, our esteemed colleague Teun Grit will leave ASTRON to enjoy his retirement. Teun joined the observatory back in 1976 as an bedieningstechnicus (operator), and later switched to become a computer programmer on the Hewlett-Packard systems of that day, after some years of studying computer science. He then moved on to become system administrator for the WSRT and fellow programmer of the famous TMS system. He later joined the LOFAR telescope as system administrator, mostly working on CEP at CIT Groningen. In his various roles he was instrumental in keeping the telescopes running, and fixing these if things broke, even if that meant coming in from his home in Westerbork outside office hours. He has a wide experience ranging from his early days on the HP systems operating the telescope and first VLBI integration of the WSRT into the EVN, through the big upgrade in the mid-nineties of the WSRT with the TMS system, and to the large networking, compute and storage systems used by LOFAR. Teun has also always been a helpful, knowledgeable, friendly, joyful, and kind colleague joining in many activities, especially sport and running related. As such he helped many ASTRON team to get over the Finish line, literally and figuratively. We will miss him dearly. Teun will enjoy his retirement with his wife and two daughters, and will stay active as a Linux consultant, with his new business "Linux Noord". |
