The mid-winter walk through our beautiful Dwingelerveld on 11 December was a success. At 12 o'clock, a cheerful crowd swung through woods and heaths to the place where the reliable people of 't Hof van Dwingeloo had pitched their "soup and sandwiches" tent, to provide us with a delicious cup of “snert” or mustard soup and sandwiches. Whilst enjoying this, we were able to relax with our colleagues, exchange ideas about daily matters, and enjoy the beauty of the surroundings. Before the walk resumed, we received a delicious “banketstaaf” from the hands of Carole Jackson. Along with this, we received a lovely poem, in which Gert Kruithof expresses in a clever way the various events that the Institute has experienced during the past year. Finally, just a little bit of awareness: in this time of global warming, where skating on the ponds seems to be rare, we may have created a valuable, new tradition with this walk: the "ASTRON/JIVE/NOVA mid-winter walk". In this way we are adapting to a new situation. To quote the wise words of Charles Darwin: “It is not the strongest species that survive, nor the most intelligent, but the one most adaptable to changes." |
