Jan Geralt bij de Vaate receives his PhD degree.

Submitter: Mark Bentum
Description: On December 9 Jan Geralt bij de Vaate obtained his PhD degree from the University of Stellenbosch. His supervisors were Prof. Dirk de Villiers and Prof. David Davidson. On the picture we see a happy Jan Geralt with his promotor Dirk de Villiers.

De title of his thesis is 'Expanding the field of view: Station design for the AAMID SKA radio telescope'. We are very proud for this great achievement !! Well done Jan Geralt.

A short summary of his thesis:
"Looking already towards expanding the Square Kilometre Array radio telescope, SKA Phase 2 will include the Mid-Frequency Aperture Array, most likely configured as all-digital arrays in large stations. This work investigates the use of a sparse, regular layout for the array elements, and compares this to the current reference design using a dense, regular topology. A new figure of merit is proposed for evaluating and comparing these designs, taking into account number of elements, cost and performance. It is concluded that sparse arrays may become competitive only when the digital processing cost per channel is substantially lower than that of the front-end radio receiver."
