CORTEX Kicked off!

| Description: | CORTEX is one of the first projects funded by the new Nationale Wetenschaps Agenda (NWA-ORC) scheme. A unique aspect of this funding scheme is that projects must strongly engage in both, science and society/industry. Producing interesting scientific results (papers, etc., considered the 'output' of the project) is considered to be just the starting point for participation of industry or non-profit organisations (called the 'outcome'), in order to achieve broader and lasting societal impact (called the 'impact'). This route from output to outcome to impact can be achieved by setting up broad consortia where academic, industrial and societal partners all work together in common interest. To establish and fund such consortia, is the purpose of the NWA-ORC program. CORTEX, led by Joeri van Leeuwen, has managed to set up and obtain funding such a consortium (see also daily image https://www.astron.nl/dailyimage/main.php?date=20190612), and to initiate to start of this consortium there was a kickoff meeting in Amsterdam, on Nov 28th 2019. The kickoff meeting was well attended and quickly led to a vibrant atmosphere. The attendees, all with an interest in Machine Learning though from different backgrounds, found common ground easily, which created strong ties and new ideas for this 6-year project. The industry partners expressed to be very keen on contributing to and applying the academic results, and saw wide-ranging potential in many of the ideas presented by the academic partners. If the atmosphere at the kickoff meeting portends the spirit for the coming six years, CORTEX will turn out to be a highly successful cooperation platform for all partners involved. ASTRON plays a major role as lead of this consortium, and will therefore profit from and get credits for all of its achievements. We are surely looking forward to the first results from this consortium! |
