Chris Broekema wins Young eScientist 2020 award

Submitter: Chris Broekema
Description: In a bit of good news to close out an interesting year, the Netherlands eScience Center announced on December 18th that Chris Broekema (ASTRON and the University of Cambridge) is one of two winners of the Young eScientist 2020 award.

The prize, which is awarded to ambitious researchers that have gained their PhD within the last six years and consist of 50.000 Euros worth of expertise provided by the Netherlands eScience Center, will be used to investigate whether revolutionary developments in quantum computing can be used in radio astronomy.

Current radio telescopes are often limited by the availability of abundant and affordable compute capacity. If we can show that the extraordinary capabilities of quantum computers can be effectively used in a radio telescope, this could significantly improve the way in which we process the large volumes of data produced by such instruments.
