Eco antennas on the testfield

Submitter: Roel Witvers
Description: Modern low frequency radio telescope systems use large amounts of antennas for realizing the desired high sensitivity. The cost of the antennas need therefor to be as low as possible. The antenna gain and the broadband performance are major factors in the antenna design but environmental friendliness and sustainability is becoming a more important factor.

This summer four students of the University of Groningen visited ASTRON for their Honours Masters Project. The students have been working on improving the environmental performance of the antennas. The goal of the work is to have an antenna with low environmental impact. Ideally the antenna can be left in nature after the scientific work has been done.

Fortunately the covid restrictions were lifted enough that the students could visit ASTRON and with the help of Sjouke they assembled a few prototypes on the test-field and did some measurements on the performance. These prototype are now included in the DTS test station to study the long term behavior of the bamboo.
